From Building Businesses to Building Ecosystems

A journey across technology, entrepreneurship, media, women’s leadership, public affairs and international partnerships – and a continuing belief that meaningful change happens when people, institutions and opportunity are brought together.

There are careers that follow a straight line.

And then there are journeys that are built one chapter at a time.

Uma Peri’s journey belongs to the second kind.

A Computer Science graduate who began her professional life in technology and corporate roles, moved into entrepreneurship, entered the world of media and events, stepped onto public platforms through pageantry, built a global women’s community, took on leadership roles in civic organisations and eventually moved deeper into strategic partnerships, government relations, international trade and institutional engagement.

Today, she describes herself as a Global Strategy & Partnerships Architect.

It is a designation that brings together many seemingly different chapters of her professional life.

Because underneath the businesses, organisations, titles and platforms is a recurring theme:

connecting people, ideas, institutions and opportunity.

With more than 13 years of cross-sector leadership experience, Peri now works across business, government, nonprofit and international ecosystems, with a focus on strategic partnerships, public affairs, investment promotion, international trade, ecosystem development and inclusive economic growth. Her current professional profile records an impact spanning more than 30,000 individuals, 120+ programmes and initiatives, a global community of 12,000+ members and support extended to more than 80 entrepreneurs.

But the numbers tell only part of the story.

The more interesting story is how she got there.

THE EARLY YEARS

Before the Strategy Came the Systems

Peri’s professional journey began with a technical education.

She completed her B.Tech in Computer Science from Andhra University, graduating in 2013.

Her early career took her through roles at Aplomb Software Technologies and HDFC ERGO General Insurance, where the work was grounded in customer relationships, problem resolution, service quality and operational responsibility.

It was a very different world from the international partnerships and ecosystem strategy associated with her work today.

Yet those early years provided something that would remain valuable throughout her career: an understanding of how organisations actually function from the inside.

In 2015, she moved into an analytical role with GlobalLogic, working onsite in connection with Google.

The experience exposed her to investigations, data analysis, policy enforcement, process improvement and automation opportunities, while requiring collaboration across engineering, sales and legal functions.

It was, in many ways, an education in systems.

And systems would eventually become one of the defining ideas of her career.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL TURN

When a Career Became a Calling to Build

In 2016, Peri moved into entrepreneurship through Novartis Career Consultancy, where she served as Co-Founder and CEO.

The organisation worked across immigration and career consulting, recruitment, employment resources and career development.

Entrepreneurship brought a different kind of education.

There was no longer a predefined role.

There was an idea to shape, people to work with, decisions to make and outcomes to own.

For Peri, entrepreneurship would eventually become less about building a single company and more about creating platforms around people and opportunity.

That distinction would become important.

2018

THE YEAR A CROWN CHANGED THE CONVERSATION

In 2018, Peri won the Mrs Hyderabad title.

The pageant world might appear distant from the world of business strategy and institutional partnerships.

For Peri, however, the experience became an unexpected education in something that would later become central to her work:

visibility.

She went on to win titles including Mrs Fashion Icon 2018, Mrs India International 2019, Mrs Awesome 2019 and Mrs World India 2020.

But the significance of the experience went beyond the titles.

Pageantry placed her in front of audiences, cameras, brands, organisers and media platforms. It brought lessons in public communication, stage presence, personal positioning and the importance of being able to tell one’s own story.

For a woman building a career, that can be a powerful lesson.

Visibility is not vanity when visibility creates opportunity.

MEDIA & STORYTELLING

Learning the Power of a Narrative

Around the same period, Peri’s relationship with media deepened.

As Head Bureau of Fashion Wave Magazine, she worked across editorial content, cover stories, feature articles, conferences, networking events and trade shows, highlighting influential personalities and emerging talent.

The experience added another dimension to her professional vocabulary.

Technology had taught her systems.

Entrepreneurship had taught her ownership.

Media taught her narrative.

And narrative, she came to understand, could determine whether an idea was merely present – or actually noticed, understood and remembered.

That understanding would later find its way into her work across branding, public relations, communications and public positioning.

2019

REDFIRE: BUILDING A CREATIVE ENTERPRISE

In 2019 came another important milestone: the founding of RedFire Creations Private Limited.

The company developed across events, media, PR, branding and public engagement.

Among the platforms associated with RedFire were Hyderabad Best Baby Contest and Wow Woman India – A Heritage Saree Pageant, alongside conferences, networking platforms, brand activations and other experiential initiatives.

The work required a combination of creativity and execution.

Ideas had to become programmes.

Programmes needed teams.

Teams needed systems.

Audiences needed engagement.

Partners needed coordination.

And every event ultimately had to deliver an experience.

It was another lesson that would influence Peri’s later approach to strategy:

An idea becomes meaningful only when somebody builds the structure that allows it to happen.

2019

THE IDEA THAT GREW INTO GOLDEN WOMEN®

If there is one chapter that most clearly illustrates the evolution of Peri’s thinking, it is Golden Women®.

The initiative began as a women-focused community and developed into a larger platform around entrepreneurship, leadership, networking, learning, visibility and economic participation.

The early years were filled with experimentation.

There were community celebrations, entrepreneur engagement programmes, digital initiatives, contests, expert sessions, business conferences, member spotlights and learning platforms.

The platform eventually expanded internationally, with chapters including the UK and Mauritius, while developing mentorship, recognition and networking initiatives for its growing community.

Today, the current executive profile describes Golden Women® as a global network of 12,000+ women entrepreneurs, leaders and changemakers across 5+ countries, with work spanning entrepreneurship, leadership, global business scaling, innovation, cross-border partnerships, knowledge exchange, technology awareness, business formalisation, financial inclusion and market access.

But perhaps the deeper story is not the growth of the community.

It is the philosophy behind it.

A woman does not always need another motivational speech. Sometimes she needs access.

Access to information.

Access to networks.

Access to markets.

Access to visibility.

Access to mentors.

Access to institutions.

Access to people who can open the next door.

That became an important part of Peri’s understanding of women’s empowerment.

BEYOND EMPOWERMENT

From Community to Economic Participation

Over time, Peri’s thinking around women’s leadership moved beyond conventional empowerment narratives.

The question became less about encouraging women to “be confident” and more about asking:

What structures allow confidence to become economic participation?

Golden Women’s programmes explored business visibility, learning, mentorship, networking, entrepreneurship and community engagement.

A community business conference could create a customer.

A member spotlight could create visibility.

A mentorship programme could change a decision.

An international chapter could open a market.

A digital learning platform could provide knowledge to someone who might otherwise not have access to it.

This is where community building began to become ecosystem building.

And it is a distinction that now runs through much of Peri’s professional philosophy.

SERVICE AS LEADERSHIP

The Other Side of the Entrepreneurial Journey

Business was not the only avenue through which Peri explored leadership.

She also became involved in community and humanitarian service.

She served as Director of Communications & Public Relations for Lions Club Hyderabad Udaan, followed by a term as Secretary, and later became President of Lions Club Hyderabad Royal for 2023–24.

Earlier, she served as a Goodwill Brand Ambassador for Noble Educational Empowerment Society, supporting educational empowerment and community awareness initiatives.

These roles added another perspective to her understanding of leadership.

Leadership could mean building a company.

It could mean creating a community.

But it could also mean showing up when there was nothing to gain commercially.

Leadership, in its most useful form, creates value for people beyond oneself.

THE PUBLIC PLATFORM

Speaking, Mentoring and Opening Doors

As her work expanded, so did her presence as a speaker, mentor, jury member and public platform participant.

She has spoken at institutions and platforms including GITAM University, Aurora University, My School Italy, Geetanjali Schools, Gyan Foundation, Maulana Azad University, Le Startups Confluence, BNI Kohinoor, ICFAI Business School, Indiapreneur and the YUVA 2025 Youth Festival, among others.

She has also served as a jury member for the IISF 2024 Startup Pitch Mission at IIT Guwahati, participated in entrepreneurship and leadership engagements and hosted leadership sessions.

The subjects have ranged from women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship to leadership, resilience, career development and personal growth.

But the evolution is visible.

The speaker who once spoke primarily about motivation increasingly speaks about strategy, opportunity, leadership and systems.

The message has moved from:

“Believe in yourself.”

to:

“What are you going to build with that belief?”

INTERNATIONAL & INSTITUTIONAL WORK

From Individual Networks to Institutional Relationships

The latest chapter of Peri’s career has expanded into international and institutional engagement.

Her current professional profile identifies her as Honorary Advisor to the BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry, supporting work associated with economic cooperation, trade, investment, innovation, entrepreneurship, cross-border partnerships, policy dialogue and stakeholder engagement.

She also serves as Assistant Commissioner with the Emergency Earth Rescue Administration, Provisional World Parliament, with responsibilities described around global governance dialogue, sustainability initiatives and institutional partnerships involving governments, institutions and civil society.

These roles represent a significant evolution in the journey.

The same woman who began by understanding systems in a technology environment is now working across business systems, institutional relationships and international ecosystems.

The scale has changed.

The underlying instinct has not.

Understand the landscape. Find the connections. Build the bridge.

THE BUSINESS OF CONNECTION

Where Strategy Meets Opportunity

Today, Peri’s professional work spans strategic leadership, business transformation, government relations, public affairs, corporate affairs, strategic partnerships, investment promotion, international trade, market expansion, ecosystem development, women’s economic development, ESG and sustainability, AI and digital transformation.

At first glance, these may appear to be separate disciplines.

In practice, they often meet at the same table.

A business looking to enter a new market needs strategy.

It may also need institutional relationships.

A government looking to attract investment needs industry connections.

An entrepreneur looking to scale needs access to partnerships.

A women-led business may need visibility, market access and networks.

An international delegation needs businesses, institutions and decision-makers in the same room.

This is the space Peri increasingly occupies.

Not simply advising from the sidelines, but connecting the pieces that make an opportunity possible.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE TITLES

There Is More Than One Way to Be a Woman Leader

There is perhaps another reason Peri’s journey is unusual.

It does not fit comfortably into one category.

She has been an entrepreneur.

A technologist.

A media professional.

A pageant titleholder.

A speaker.

A community leader.

A founder.

A mentor.

An advisor.

A strategist.

A public-facing personality.

An institutional representative.

Each identity could have become the entire story.

Instead, each became another layer.

And perhaps that is one of the more important lessons of the journey.

Women do not have to choose one identity simply because the world finds multiple identities inconvenient.

A woman can build a company and build a community.

She can be commercially ambitious and socially conscious.

She can work with institutions and remain deeply connected to grassroots communities.

She can speak on a stage and negotiate around a boardroom table.

She can reinvent herself without apologising for the previous version of herself.

RECOGNITION

The journey has also brought recognition.

Among the honours associated with Peri’s work are the Startup of the Year Award 2019, Sthree Shakti Award 2019, Aadarsha Mahila Puraskar 2019, Women Achievers Award 2021 and Visishta Bharathi Award 2023, along with recognition as a Women Icon by Women’s World Records.

Her earlier profile also records her participation as a jury member for award shows and pageants and invitations to serve as chief guest and special guest at numerous programmes.

Awards, however, occupy a relatively small place in the larger narrative.

They mark moments.

They do not define the journey.

BY THE NUMBERS

A Journey That Has Become a Network

13+ years
of cross-sector leadership

30,000+
individuals impacted

120+
programmes and initiatives executed

12,000+
global community members

80+
entrepreneurs supported

Behind each number is a story.

A business.

A conversation.

A woman.

A founder.

A student.

A partnership.

A platform.

And perhaps a door that opened.

WHAT COMES NEXT

From Experience to Perspective

Peri’s work today is increasingly concerned not simply with what can be built, but with how things connect.

Business does not operate separately from policy.

Entrepreneurship does not exist separately from ecosystems.

Visibility does not exist separately from influence.

Partnerships do not exist separately from trust.

And economic opportunity rarely exists without relationships.

This thinking has become the foundation of Peri-Spective, her emerging platform for ideas on strategy, leadership, entrepreneurship, business, influence, women’s economic development, partnerships and the changing ecosystems around us.

If the earlier chapters of her career were about building and doing, Peri-Spective represents another stage:

The stage where experience becomes thought.

A WOMAN STILL IN THE MAKING

There is a temptation, when looking at a long career, to arrange it neatly backwards.

To make every decision appear intentional.

To make every chapter look like it was leading inevitably toward the next.

Real journeys are rarely that neat.

There are experiments.

There are unexpected opportunities.

There are reinventions.

There are moments when a person has to begin again.

There are things that work.

There are things that don’t.

And there are lessons that only become visible years later.

Peri’s journey is perhaps best understood in that way.

Not as a straight climb.

But as a series of chapters that gradually revealed a larger pattern.

Technology taught her systems.

Entrepreneurship taught her ownership.

Media taught her narrative.

Pageantry taught her visibility.

Community building taught her belonging.

Service taught her responsibility.

International work taught her scale.

And strategy brought the pieces together.

HER CENTRAL BELIEF

Build Something That Gives Others Somewhere to Go.

That may ultimately be the most consistent idea running through Peri’s work.

A company should create opportunity.

A community should create belonging.

A partnership should create value.

A platform should create visibility.

Leadership should create more leaders.

And an ecosystem should create possibilities that no single person could create alone.

For Peri, the next chapter is therefore not simply about adding another designation to an already long list.

It is about bringing the different worlds she has travelled through into a larger architecture of strategy, influence, partnerships and ecosystems.

THE VIEW FROM HERE

Still Building. Still Connecting. Still Learning.

There are businesses still to build.

Ideas still to develop.

Women still to connect.

Markets still to explore.

Partnerships still to create.

Leaders still to mentor.

And ecosystems still to design.

The journey that began with a Computer Science degree has travelled through corporate life, entrepreneurship, media, fashion, pageantry, community leadership, women’s empowerment and international engagement.

It has crossed industries.

It has crossed borders.

And increasingly, it crosses institutions.

Yet the underlying purpose remains remarkably simple:

To turn ideas into direction.

To turn relationships into partnerships.

To turn opportunities into action.

To turn initiatives into ecosystems.

And to turn ambition into meaningful impact.

AN OPEN INVITATION

Perhaps the best way to understand Uma Peri is not through any single title.

It is through the spaces where she works.

  • Business.
  • Institutions.
  • Media.
  • Leadership.
  • Partnerships.
  • Women’s economic development.
  • Global ecosystems.

The common thread is connection.

Because in a world increasingly defined by networks, the ability to connect the right people, ideas, institutions and opportunities may itself become one of the most valuable forms of leadership.

And that is where the next chapter begins.
